Smash the mirror

This makes me feel ashamed of my whining, navel-gazing rant.

Harold Pinter, playwright and 2005 Nobel prize winner, gave an incredible acceptance speech, despite being confined to a wheelchair and barely able to speak because of recent illness. Once you get past his opening comments about his own work, you get to an incredible critique of American foreign policy.

Truly courageous are those who dare to speak truth to power.

My student's final exams asked them to comment on the historical fact that Presidents who lead the nation into military conflict are almost never around to lead over the peace. They had to pick and discuss 3 conflicts since 1866 so we started making a list of engagements that had come up over the semester to choose from. I think we got to about 12 or 13 and
someone said, "Oh my God we've been at war the entire time!"

Yup, the fact of it is that especially since 1945 military action has been the prime method of US foreign policy. To quote 2 great men (Malcolm X and Rob Tyner of the MC5) "The chickens will come home to roost."

That's brilliant man. I remember having that reaction myself when I came to realize that. You're a fantastic teacher.
