Letterman 1, O'Reilly 0

Hoosier boy David Letterman recently had Bill O'Reilly on his show and definitely one upped him. You can watch the video here. Keep you eyes on the mug of water seen at the beginning of the clip.

Cheers and kudos to Dave for keeping his disgust for O'Reilly under control and not letting O'Reilly bait him with it. The money quote from Letterman: "I have the feeling that 60% of what you say is crap..."

The other 40% of what he says are lies. Bill's story about the schoolchildren being forced to sing alternative lyrics are entirely false:

I agree. He's just a sleaze; the prime purveyor of fear and hate that fuels The Backlash in this country. Terrorists on the outside, pc liberals on the inside.

And he does it all for ratings, and ratings equals money, which makes him The Model American in this country, douchebag that he is.

I think O'Reilly represents what he has always represented: exploitative, tabloid journalism..he's just on the Op-Ed page of the Fox tabloid rather than the front page of ('Peabody Award Winning') Inside Edition...with more nefarious ends in mind.

I podcast Al Franken's radio show every now and then, and have come to feel the O'Reilly-fact-check shtick is getting tired...not to mention it is drawing fire and attention away from Washington realities.

O'Reilly is a fountain of 'wedge' issues...and wedge issues work both ways. They fire up your base, as well as infuriate and distract your opposition.

As folks selfrighteously hang on every forked word that comes out of that ass puppet's ass (and I have..), Bush sneaks through 17 scary recess appointments. (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/01/05/AR2006010501421.html)

Moreover-If O'Reilly gets taken down...you still have Hannity, Limbaugh, Scarborough, Bortz and not to mention crazy 'Diamond Pat' to deal with...and probably a bunch more than that.

Dave was fantastic though...very well done.

In a ranting mood.
Flame away.

I brought this up with Bob over the weekend, but I don't think confronting O'Reilly is a distraction, I think it's a must.

One of the biggest reasons The Backlash has happened, or at least that it's under Republican control, is that liberals and democrats have always towed this line; that such nonsense isn't worth responding to, or that responding to it distracts from talking about much more important issues. I personally agree that there are much more important issues we should be dealing with as a society, but I know that most Americans aren't like me. That is to say, they don't give a shit.

We've lost the propoganda war by not openly calling O'Reilly what he is, a fear monger and liar. Sure, sites like Media Matters and the like are a good step, but we've still got a corporate owned mainstream media that parrots nearly everything coming out of the right wing propaganda machine, a good deal of which is fed by O'Reilly.

Hell, Lou Dobbs gave that War Against Christmas nonsense airplay of CNN during primetime. Bollocks. O'Reilly must be stopped.

Point taken Chico, and I agree that O'Reilly must be confronted.

BUT..What I was saying, in a nutshel, was that I think it is better to focus on the true issues and forwarding our own interests- rather than getting mired in a tit-for-tat flame-off with an idiot.

The more time we give that clown, is more time that he remains in the spotlight...As I mentioned to you this weekend, O'Reilly saw a huge ratings jump after his appearance on Letterman.

In fact, I believe such attention is his lifeblood. The more irate liberals screaming at him the better-from his perspective. See the following AP article for more on this:
